A permanent land exhibit at the Carey Furnace just outside of Pittsburgh showcases what was once one of the most important eras of American History. Pittsburgh was once the heart of the steel industry, and exhibit@FURNACE displays the importance of the cities past and innovative future. As a steel infested landscape rolls into a museum that displays its steel history, the architecture spans and floats to show its future. The structural steel shell lifts above the 100yr flood plain and conceptually protects the vulnerable lightweight programmatic boxes from the exterior environment. The shell is open to a continuous view of the Carey Furnace and shields the galleries from the direct sunlight.
